The “Dependent Visa” is one of the legally recognized residency statuses in Japan, required when a foreigner residing in Japan wishes to bring their dependent family members to Japan. This residency status mainly applies to the spouses and children of foreigners who hold work-related, highly skilled, specified skills, or student residency statuses.

Eligible Persons

The Dependent Visa is for the dependent family members of foreigners who hold work-related (such as technology, humanities knowledge, international services), highly skilled, specified skills, or student residency statuses. Specifically, it applies to spouses and minor children.

Application Requirements

To apply for a Dependent Visa, the following requirements must be met.

Residency Status of the Supporter

The supporter must hold a legal residency status in Japan, and that residency status must allow for dependent residency.

Relationship Status

There must be a legal marital or parent-child relationship between the applicant and the supporter. A marriage certificate or birth certificate is required.

Financial Support Requirement

The supporter must prove their ability to financially support the applicant. Specifically, they must submit documents such as pay slips or bank balance certificates.

Residency Activities

Under the Dependent Visa, work is generally not permitted. However, by obtaining permission for activities outside the scope of the visa, work up to 28 hours per week is possible.

Changing from Dependent Visa to Other Residency Status

It is possible to change from a Dependent Visa to other residency statuses such as a work visa or permanent resident. For the change, permission from the Immigration Services Agency is required.
